Free Pattern: Whale Shark Plush Toy

Meet the Whale Shark – a simple, soft, and slightly sparkly friend you can sew in no time.

This free pattern is perfect for beginners and works beautifully with 3mm blue viscose fabric (available in our shop). The fabric has a subtle shimmer that gives the whale a vintage, elegant feel – simple materials, elevated result.

What you’ll need:

  • Free whale pattern (download below)

  • 3mm blue viscose fabric (or any soft woven fabric)

  • Matching thread, scissors, pins

  • Stuffing fiber

  • Optional: small amount of contrasting fabric for fins

  • Pattern notes:
The pattern pieces do not include seam allowance. Please add 2–3mm when cutting.

How to sew:

  1. Cut your pieces
Print and cut the pattern. Trace onto fabric and cut out:

    • Upper body (A1) x2

    • Belly (tummy) x1

    • Fins (A2) x4

  2. Sew the upper body
Stitch along the curved edge from A1 to A2 on both upper body pieces.

  3. Prepare the fins
Sew the fin pieces together in pairs, leaving the straight edge open. Turn right side out and set aside.

  4. Assemble the body
Pin the upper body pieces to the belly piece, right sides together. Insert the fins in place before stitching all around. Leave a small opening for turning.

  5. Finish
Turn right side out, stuff firmly, and hand-stitch the opening closed.

Your whale shark is ready for a share with friends, a carrying, or a spot on the shelf.
